Big win in Vegas

Rinker Materials will supply a total of 1.2 million cubic yards of concrete for the 61-acre MGM Project City Center in Las Vegas.

There's winning, and then there is winning big. For the Rinker Materials team in Las Vegas, winning big is the name of the game.

Securing the contract to supply 1.2 million cubic yards [917,520 cubic metres] of concrete to the largest privately funded construction project in the United States – the MGM Project City Center – has certainly given the team a reason to smile.

Unlike being dealt the perfect hand of cards, it wasn't just luck that got them through. Safety, quality control, production capacity, truck fleet, raw materials supply, knowledge of the environmentally friendly construction LEED Program and our diversity program were all key factors considered before the contract was won.

The US$7 billion multi-use project is set on a 61-acre site on the famous Las Vegas Strip. This project is so big that when completed - sometime in the next four years - the development will change the face of the strip.

The project boasts several high-rise luxury condominiums, a large casino and hotel, a huge shopping complex and all the amenities that go along with a high-end project. To help feed this concrete-hungry project, Rinker Materials has placed an on-site portable concrete plant capable of producing 350 cubic yards [268 cubic metres] of concrete per hour.

"The project schedule is definitely on a fast track and requires the plant to operate 24/7," says Bob Albano, vice president Nevada Region. "The proposal required teamwork across all functions within the region and is a testament to the talent, expertise and professionalism of our people."
